Chippewa Bill of Materials

FIBERGLASS MATERIALS (Fiberglass version): Weights of fiberglass materials other than those listed are not recommended; lighter materials can affect the strength of the boat, while heavier materials will make the boat heavier and perhaps impair performance. Epoxy resins are not recommended. Quantities of fiberglass materials listed are estimates. More or less materials may be required depending on wastage.

Two types of resin are used. It is important that the first coat over the C-Flex be a low shrink resin; non-thixotropic clear laminating or marble casting resin of 600-1000 cps.(C-Flex resin). After the initial coat, standard laminating and finish resin can be used.

LUMBER: Most lumber is "four quarter" lumberyard stock, usually finished to 3/4" net thickness. All widths are net, while all lengths allow for cutting to fit. The sheers on this design are "five quarters", which finishes to approx. 1" NET. All lumber sizes should be checked to the work before purchasing. When long lengths are not available, splices may be made by a scarf joint of 1:12 ratio; full length members are desirable for this hull. All lumber should be free from knots, splits, and other defects. Mahogany refers to "dark red" Philippine or central American varieties. Spruce refers to Sitka spruce. Douglas-fir, white oak, and similar woods used for boat construction may be substituted. For temporary members that will not remain in the boat, pine or fir is ideal, although any reasonably clear and straight lumber can be used.
