MiniMaxed Bill of Materials

SECTION.
HULL MATERIAL LISTING: The following listing is an estimate of the materials
required and is intended to serve as a general guide only. Check the various
options and alternatives to the plans, to the work, and to the materials which
may be available in the area in which the hull will be built. The listing may
also vary due to the amount of waste and other variables that cannot be
controlled.
LUMBER: All lumber used should be first grade, free from knots, shakes, checks,
or other defects. All lumber sizes should be checked to the work before
purchasing wherever possible. Lumber typical to the locale and proven in use in
boats of similar type can be used as long as the weight, strengths, and
characteristics are similar. Suitable boatbuilding woods include Douglas fir
(DF), white oak, mahogany (Mahog), Philippine dark red, American, or African
types commonly used in boats), Sitka spruce, Alaskan or Port Orford cedar, and
yellow pine. The listing calls out the preferable material but substituting
lumbers as noted in the foregoing is optional. All 1" lumber is standard
"four quarters" lumberyard stock, usually finished to 3/4"
thickness, while all widths are net. Material listed as 1" x 1" is
ripped from standard 1" stock and will be 3/4" thick and 1"
wide. All 2" x 3" material is standard lumberyard stock in both width
and thickness. All lengths listed allow for cutting to fit.
Abbreviations used in the following are: DF = Douglas-Fir; Mahog. = Mahogany;
PW = Plywood; MAR = Marine; EXT = Exterior.

PLYWOOD: All plywood must be intended for marine (Mar)
or exterior (Ext) use; interior grades are not acceptable. The marine grade
panel features higher grade inner ply cores, while the exterior plywood grade
cores may have voids not apparent to the eye, and may also use those made from
woods not as suitable for marine applications. Exterior panels may also be
"scant" or slightly less than the full noted dimension. In most
cases, the glues used in both the marine and exterior panels are the same
waterproof type, however, the decision to use exterior panels in lieu of marine
panels must lie with the builder, considering the particular use of the panel
in the boat and the expected service. The letters A, B and C designate the
grade of the exterior veneers with A grade the best, etc. Douglas-fir (DF) is
acceptable for all plywood, although mahogany or other attractive veneers are
optional. The plywood bottom is preferably marine grade, although the original
MINIMAX specifications called out "AC Exterior grade plywood"
throughout. When using plywood with lower grade veneers keep the "C"
side of the deck and bottom on the interior and so other parts are not visible
from the cockpit. |

fiberglass covered and "B" when it is not. The fiberglass materials
required to cover the entire hull bottom, sides, and transom are listed
separately under "FIBERGLASSING".
EPOXY RESIN: Marine grade epoxy is used for gluing (with thickeners
added), encapsulation, and applying fiberglass tape; EPOXY-SHIELD is
advised.
- With Kit A: when hull is fiberglass covered = 2 qts. with slow
hardener
- With Kit B: when hull is NOT fiberglass covered = 1 gal plus 3
quarts with slow hardener
ADDITIVES: For thickening epoxy resin for gluing and making fillets.
Required for both Kits A and B.
- 1 lb. microspheres
- 1 lb. silica
FIBERGLASS TAPE: Use 6-8 oz. fiberglass cloth cut into 3" and
4" strips diagonally.
- With Kit A when hull is fiberglass covered= 1 2/3 yd. 38"
cloth
- With Kit B when hull is NOT fiberglass covered= 6 1/3 yds. 38"
cloth
FASTENINGS: Required for both Kit A or B.
SCREWS: Wood type, flat head, bronze or galvanized:
- 7/8" #8 = 72 required
- 1 1/2" #8 = 36 required
- 2" #10 = 6 required
- 3" #14 = 12 required
NAILS: Bronze ring type boat nails.
MISCELLANEOUS: Required for either Kit A or B. STITCHING WIRE:
