Buckboard Bill of Materials
Before ordering materials, a check should be made to the text for possible
options. All lumber used should be first grade free from shakes and knots.
Spruce, mahogany and oak are listed, however, similar lumbers used in the
locale and of similar qualities may be substituted. Spruce refers to the Sitka
variety and is preferred because of its light weight. Mahogany refers to the
dark red variety and is the wood that finished with the finest appearance. Fir
refers to Douglas-fir and can be considered satisfactory where listed. All
lumber noted as 1" in thickness is to be "lumberyard stock" that
usually finishes to 3/4" in thickness. All 2" material is also
standard stock that usually finishes out to 1-5/8" in thickness. All
material less than 1" in thickness is net. It is preferable to group all
materials and resaw to the exact noted widths although standard lumber yard
widths may be substituted. All lengths allow material for trimming to size. All
plywood MUST be of an exterior type. A marine type with solid core is the best,
but the exterior type may be used on a craft of this type. The faces may be
either AA or AB veneers. Where a B face is used, it should preferably be on the
inside surface of the hull.
Abbreviations: DF = Douglas-fir, SP = Sitka spruce, MAH = Mahogany.
