Good info from Ken. I keep pushing CPES or home-thinned epoxy for sealing the wood. It also improves bonds because it penetrates deeply. With oak, I'd advocate heating, then sealing, then gluing. That way, the wood will be more thoroughly water-proofed, reducing swelling and the gallic acid problem, and the epoxy GLUE will adhere better to the epoxy SEALER than it would to bare wood.
