I was in your shoes about 20 years ago and I wanted to build Hal Kelly's "Foo-Ling" and my Dad talked me out of it. I got a jet ski instead. I now own my own home and can build what ever in the hell I want too! I've built about 3 1/2 boats (one still in frames) and know the minimax well. I'ts only about 80 lbs and can move your little self pretty quick I imagine, but that's mainly because of weight, or lack of..
The more people you put in your boat, the slower it is going to go. I'd suggest more power! If you want to carry about 4 people max, build it to hold 4 people and power it for that load. Then, when you just want to haul ass, get in it by yourself and get on it!
Build something that was designed to handle about 35-40 hp and put on a 50HP. You'll have loads more fun if you can have 4 people and still have performance. Your boat is going to have to be bigger, probably 14 ft or so. Look for designs in that size range. You can also check the website for more designs. I'm the builder of "Doodlebug".

Good luck!
