: I would like to build a Riviera, that style of boat just captures my imagination. My question is, should I start smaller? I have never built a boat before. I am a machinist by trade but wood is all new to me. Also what three tools can't I live without? (ex. band saw, tablesaw, planer)

Good question Jeff,

I am also a machinist and am currenty building the "Utility" as a starter boat. My interest is in the Bo Jest.

I would suggest a smaller boat to start on before the Riviera. It will help build your confidence and your woodworking skills.

I have a Bandsaw, Tablesaw, Radial Arm saw along with various hand power tools, skill saw, planer, drill motor, etc.

Of the larger tools I would say a band saw is the most important. Other cuts can be done with the skill saw.

Good luck and the best advice is to start now.

Jim.
