Graham: I used butt joints on my 22' Hunky Dory. Using standard 8' lengths of marine ply, there is no way to avoid a joint in the forward (curved)section of the hull. I used a stiff batten to bring the butting pieces into the same plane however despite my best efforts there is a very slight but noticable "ridge" at the joint in the forward section. This is after a coat of semi gloss paint. I havn't lost any sleep over this but if I had to do it over I would scarf the plywood. Matt Krick (see Registry/Hunky Dory) used the John Henry scarfing jig and reported good results. I would have needed to purchase the jig and the power planer both (maybe $250) and I still think I would have done this. Best of luck.
