Most important thing is to use the biggest (largest diameter) needle you can find. When you get to corners, where you have to penetrate several thicknesses of canvas, you'll probably have to advance by hand rather than motor.
Don't get a sewing machine from Joanne Fabrics or similar. Go to a place that just sells sewing machines, they can advise you best. There are excellent machines made for sailmaking, but they're expensive, and don't have a lot of nice features you might be used to, like free-arm for cuffs. They sew sails, not dresses.
