I built a XP-8 two winters ago, and I am running a mid 70's Merc. model 110, 9.8 HP. Took it out yesterday with a 10P prop and got it up to 25MHP. I need more speed, and I realize that some day Im going to have to get a real 3-point hydro. I've heard people talk about "speed rails" or peices of wood about 1"x1.5"x4-5' it along either side of the bottom of the hull to direct all the water under the hull, lifting the boat up, giving a higher speed. I want to put these my XP-8, and I did notice that a lot of water does seem to be coming out from e sides. My question: Does anyone here know about the effectiveness of speed rails, and would you reccomend them?
