The quickie is short for a quicksilver lower unit it also was part of a special midsection or tower that was for racing. There are several old non-racing motors that could be used for your project. The best ones are the old Merc two cylinders, they are very light, powerful, and durable. Look for the Merc KE7, KF7, KG7 etc. motors they have 20 cu.in. and are still around. I belong to several sites with other old racers I believe we can help you with the right engine. The short shaft motors are for a 15"-16" transom and the long shaft is 5" longer.
: I am new at this game and want to know what constitutes a "short-shaft" outboard? I am looking for a 15 maybe 20 HP motor for a small monoplane hydroplane (8ft to 9 ft)and have been researching online on the subject, but haven't been able to find any defining specifications. 35 - 40 years ago my buddy had a souped-up old Mercury 10 horse outboard with what he called a "quickie lower unit". It had no transmission. Is this what I'm looking for? Or is a short shaft something altogether different?
