Our family had an original from 1963 until about 1990 when it finally had more patches than original material. They're great fun to drive - safe for kids - and a hoot for adults who can use some of their extra - er... weight to get the outboard chines out of the water on tight turns. Something surprised me on the plans though - the 5HP motor recommendation. We ran ours (albeit orginal construction - not S&G) with either a racing 7.5 or a 9.5 and its was perfectly stable. In fact, I'm sure the orginal plans allowed for up to 18HP (!! - yes, that's eighteen). My brother ran ours once wih a borrowed 18. Very quick. Very.
