In Reply to: Polyester over epoxy- does it work? posted by Tom McKinney on December 22, 2002 at 14:04:41:
: I want to put a layer of glass and resin over a plywood hull, mostly to stop checking. I also want to save $$$. I know polyester doesn't stick to wood all that well but epoxy does. I also know that epoxy sticks to polyester layups. The question is, will a polyester layup stick to epoxy? That way I could doe one pre-coat of epoxy and then set the fabric down with ployester. I could also spray on gel-coat over the poly which I could not do on epoxy. Any htoughts or comments?
: Thanks

Tom...
I have done this many times. I have talked to the composite engineers here, and they have told me this: As long as you sand the amine off the epoxy, the polyester will stick. The drawback is the bond is not as strong as epoxy to wood. it has worked for me in many cases, as I glassed it with epoxy. However after a couple of years in the weather unpainted, the epoxy degraded. I Glassed over it with Polyester with no ill effects and it has been two years.
(sorry about the first post... didn't figure out this posting thing!)
