If it's Okoume rotary cut it will probably have some "wild" grain that will finish nicely but not necessarily like the old boat look. Okoume appearance can vary from sheet to sheet. I bought 4 pieces of it that were mostly uniform in appearance. I've read that Meranti (slighly heavier) is darker with a more traditional look but I've never had any experience with it. The folks at Noahsmarine.com can help answer your questions.
: OK I ordered the squirt plans and frame kit. WIll build in marine grade ply etc... but I want the "old fashioned wooden boat look"... where do I buy Mahogony veneer... or is that even what I want? Do I completely build the boat and then cover it with a veneer and then epoxy over that and varnish over that?..I am getting pretty good at painting so maybe that will be the alternative. Mark B I will check your web site to see if you detail how that is done.
