Since my original post I have been doing some motor research. Nissan seems to be the least expensive, reasonably good motor, at least so I'm told. Discounts off MSRP are common, and that $2800 motor is $2050 to $2200 online. Mercury motors are a bit more; Honda's are much more.
Used is cheaper. Two stroke is cheaper than 4, but you can't buy a new two-stroke in California.
I haven't bought one yet, but will have to soon.
