Mike,
This is advice from one building his second boat. My advice would be to build something small and simple the first time. My first was a 12' sailing skiff. The real purpose of the first boat, for me, was to learn the basics without my mistakes being more costly than necessary. Secondly, I wanted to make sure I had what it takes to finish the project. The lessons from that 12 footer have paid big dividends in the speed and quality with which I am currently built a 17' power boat.
Whatever you choose to do, enjoy the project and take the time to fully understand each step before proceeding.
