: This will be my first time building a boat. What should I choose? The problem is that I've never worked with either wood or epoxy before, but I don't want to start with such a small project that I wouldn't use the boat. Ideally, I'd like something that 2-4 people can comfortably cruise around on. Something that I could sleep out a night on would be great! I don't care at all about speed, I'd rather have good gas mileage.

Hi Mike!

My suggestion is that you donŽt choose any boat at all. Not to start with anyway. Sorry, but listen to what I have to say.
Me myself was looking for a boat that could keep me and a couple of my friends floating during fishing. Them boats which was avalible at the market was far to expencive so I decided to built one if my own. Then I have to settle for a boat that was small enough to be trailerable and fit in my garage (where I also planned to to build it) and big enough to stand the Baltic Ocean.
The boat that match my request was Glen-L Bravado, a 17 ft overnighter, and I ordered the plans and pattern toghether with some books because I like to learn much more about selfmade boats. One book that i varmly recomend is the "Boatbuilding With Plywood". I have read it and translated it to my own language (swedish) and I find it very educational because a lots of questionmarks has been rightioned.
You are right about not to choose a boat that will never fit your request. Be sure to choose a boat that youŽll be proud of and will fulfill your demands and herebye you must be honest; Do you have the skill or can you get it?
IŽm sure that you can, whith the right literature and a big portion of "go for it".
A very good luck,
Gert.
