I recently acquired a Glen-L 17 that was built in 1973 using marine grade mahogany plywood. The hull is varnished, and was never touched with epoxy or fiberglass! This boat was meticulously maintained by the previous owner (who was also the builder). The result of using high quality plywood and good maintenance practices is that, even after 25 years (which is very old for a wooden boat), every wood surface on this boat (including the hull) is in excellent condition! So, the extra expense of using good quality plywood is well justified, in that it will producer a very long-lived hull without the need to resort to epoxy and fiberglassing.
