: : I have decided to build either ofthe two above. Has anyone in Australia built or began construction of these. I am a relative novice to boat building and would appreciate any help which I could be afforded. Cheers

: While I am in New Zealand it is perhaps close enough to offer some advice. I started my Riviera about 6 months ago and have had no problems up to the planking stage.
: The frames and keel, chines & inside planking are all Macrocarpa which is really cheap in this country. The outside veneer is to be Mahogany.
The Monaco and Riviera plans from Glen L are easily within the grasp of the amatuer builder. Thehardest part I found was the transom and trying to decide how the designer had drawn it. Once I worked out that it's drawn from the top it was pretty straight forward. All my frames are macrocarpa and are glued and nailed as per the plans then stained and Everdured which is an epoxy wood preservative similar to West system products.
All chines sheers keel and longditudinals were treated in a similar manner then glued and screwed into place. The inside lamination of planking was also treated as above before installation. These planks were glued into place with epoxy glue stained the same colour as the timber. This planking I stapled into place using 3/8inch stainless steel staples. I did this so I don't have to remove all the staples between laminations. The outside lamination is of sapele mahogany which I have cut to 1/4inch thick. Because the planks are only 3inches wide the planking went on real easy. This outside lamination had a minimum number of staples asthe boat is to be finished bright so all staples are removed After fairing which was done with a long flexible sanding batten and about 20 hours hard work the mahogany was Everdured. The boat was then turned over to work on the deck and thats where it's at now. More details later.
