Have you ever cut the throttle on an outboard with a heavy engine? Water tends to surge forward in great quantities! The motor well serves to protect you from swamping. Underneath is also a handy spot for keeping fuel tanks, anchor, tool kit, bilge pump etc. I can't imagine a boat like that without a motor well.
