Douglas fir would be a fine substitute. Beware, though that if you use "lumber yard" grade dougfir (the pale yellow close ringed type is o.k., NOT the orange punky wide spaced ringed variety) and you can find clear long pieces with vertical grain by picking through piles, it is still green and should be seasoned before using.
