A common solution for sliding, flat-bottomed
boats is to apply rub strips, .75x1.50, on about
8 inch centers across the bottom. They will
provide protection, stiffen the hull, some
air entrapment and LATERAL RESISTANCE. I agree
that fins get in the way. Most Jon boats have
you will notice.
My hydro will not turn at all without
its fin - I tried. You can not put
rub strips on a three-point hydro, so
I live with the fin.
The best cure for sliding hulls is a
deep V. Both of the 12 footers I have
built included a 1:3 V. They carved
corners, did not hop, and gave a soft
ride in a chop.
