I have just finished a Glen-L Utility and wanted to keep the Wooden Boat look. I have designed/built many R/C boats and had used an acrylic stain (water soluable vice oil) on the plywood with fiberglass over it. I tried this on the Utility with mixed success. The glass and polyester resin went on ok but the glass did not stick as well as it should have. I think I did not let the stain dry out enough (do not use oil stain). On the deck I did not put down stain but put the glass directly on the wood and then used Pecan flavored Minwax Polycolor varnish over the glass/resin (much sanding-may want to cut resin with acetone and use more coats). Make sure that you go over the resin with acetone to remove the surface wax before you varnish. You can tell when you have it all off by how easy it is to sand. The wax will plug your sandpaper poste-haste.The result was first rate. I finished the interior the same way and it looks super. I finished off with a yellow stripe on the sheer and down the bow, seats are in matching yellow. : Any suggestions on how to keep the wooden-boat look for a plywood boat (14 ft Power Skiff)? it seems a shame to paint it. Are verneers the answer? Doorskins? Any comments would be appreciated.
: Thanks.
