This will work fine. I have done it myself on the TwoPlus I am currently building. I used water based stain (mix of powder and water) to achieve the color I wanted. Then three layers of epoxy. I plan to put 5 or more layers of 2K urethane clearcote on top of this. I think the urethane varnish is necessary to achieve good UV protection.
