Ken: Take a look at a gooseneck set up too. It has the advantage of the increased weight capacity of the fifth wheel, but requires much less bed space. Also, there are numerous pop up style set ups that allow you to return to a normal bed on the truck in less than 30 seconds. Pop ups run somewhere between 200 and 500 bucks plus installation.

As to brakes, check you state's regs, but most require brakes on trailers over a certain footage or a specific weight, or a combination of both.
