I've had several sailboats, seems like sailors put them anywhere they are good and visible! Are you considering the "bulkhead" mounted type - which also show some inclination indication? I believe bigger is better, for these sailing aids. You might also want to consider mounting a bubble type "inclinometer" - which shows amount of "heel" the boat is undertaking. West Marine has some nice ones.

: I am installing a bulkhead compass on my Tango on the external rear of the cabin. Is there a particular format for which side I install it on or does it matter? This might seem a dumb question but I should explain that even though my Tango is nearing completion I still have to learn how to sail.
