Having had a sailboat similar to the Tango (a weekend cruiser type) I would suggest that you consider the type of compass that mounts through the bulkhead and that you can read from either side. Which side of the cabin you mount it on really doesn't matter--there is no "standard".
Being able to read it from inside is convenient if you are below at anchor and wonder if the wind has shifted. A quick check of the compass tells you.
