I don't have experience with hydros, but in my way of thinking, the abrasion protection and longevity of the boat make it "worth the trouble". The glass also adds some strength to the plywood, but I'm not clear how important that is. I think it also makes it easier to get a nice flat finish, compared to just coating with resin.

Consider also that resin by itself can crack (more so with polyester than with epoxy, but still...). Micro cracks can let water in and jeapardize structural integrity. Cloth prevents that.

On the negative, there's weight. If you're entering sanctioned racing, then that could be a critical issue. Otherwise, you'll never notice the difference.
