You are correct about the engine rotation on that setup. That is how they arrived at opposite rotation many moons ago. I am not a old Chevy expert, but I believe you could turn that engine around and still use it. Isnt the flywheel housing bolt pattern still there? Nowadays they arrive at opposite rotation by using a geardrive cam, with no idler gear, then all other parts are standard. Only the cam drive and starter change.
