Why hardboard?
It is dense (heavy) and not at all stiff. Everything seems to be working in the wrong direction compared to normal stiff and light (low density). The gfiberglass sheathing does not add as mich stiffness as you might think at first pass. The hull design definitely depends on the strength of the substrate.
I would definitely recommend sticking with plywood and covering with fiberglass.

As far as the epoxy penetration, it will vary quite a bit with how the hardboard is prepared. The temperd surface is quite dense (minimizing penetration) and you may also have adhesion problems due to the wax coating that I have seen on some (processing aid?).
