Seems to me that the gunwales of small craft have some beef in the form of rails which I think are called "shear clamps" or something like that. The oarlocks are not simply attached to the top edge of the skin, but to something a lot stronger, which also holds the shape of the shear (top edge of the boat). I haven't seen study plans of the sneak box, but I would think it would have something more substantial than just a raw edge of plywood.
