If you removed the pulley and there was no belt turning the water pump (engine circulation) then, yes there could be some serious damage to more than just a seal.
The seal itself is a fairly simple job if you are experienced in engine work. If not leave it to the pros.
Good luck.

: : I have twin 180hp 470's in my Carver. At start up this spring the port engine would turn over. I found the magnets in the alternator rotor had come loose and jammed against the coils. I removed the pulley(rotor) and she started. Since I had twins I figured one alternator would keep me going until I got a replacement. Well I made my first trip this past weekend without replacing the pulley and found that oil is leaking from what looks like the front main seal. Did I do any serious damage to the seal by running the engine without the pulley? If so can the seal be easily replaced?
: : Thanks,
