They're loud. You can hear them a long way off. Typically an outboard has a full shroud and a waterjacket to help suppress noise. The B&S has neither. Rumor mill says (I live in WI) that they had a ex-Mercury engineer help with development. That fact, combined with Briggs' extreme reliabilty, should make it durable.
