I tried to use a larger PVC pipe, but I had a problem finding spuds (or any veggie) to fit in the barrell with a tight seal. I didn't try a mellon. I guess a watermellon sliced to size would probably work. I did have some success when I used some rags as wadding, and stuffed in about four rotten tomatoes. I swear, it launched those tomatoes through a picket fence. broke the pickets even. Lotsa fun, I recommend making one. heh.
