Here is a screw and pilot hole size chart that I have found to be helpful. Yes the sizes vary with wood hardness a bit. Hardwoods need to completely clear the shank.

I just use straight bits. In my opinion, the tapered bits are a waste of money.

Depending on what you are fastening, epoxy, 5200 and SnoSeal are all good screw lubricants. SnoSeal is a beeswax compound for waterproofing boots and is perfect when you want the screw to be removable.
