Steering system details are going to vary greatly from boat to boat, even when the hulls are of the same basic design, so the plans don't have a lot to say on the subject. However, purchased systems (available from on-line suppliers) seem to be very straightforward, are complete, and do have very good instructions. I installed a Teleflex system in my Console Skiff and have been very satisfied with the way it went in and the way it has performed. And, of course, there is always the tried-and-true method of going to the dock or boat store and looking at how other boat's steering systems are set up. A picture really is worth a thousand words!

Mine's an outboard, so I'm not sure how much help I can be with your second question about inboards, except to say that one of the great things about building your own boat is that you can pay as you go, saving up for the big things and buying them as you can afford them. A cheaper route is to go "used", especially for the big ticket items like engines.

In general, the most important thing I think one needs to consider when thinking about building a boat is that while the project can look overwhelming when seen as a whole, it's just a matter of breaking it down and taking each step one at a time. You can do it!
