Jim,
Get a large piece of cardboard and keep cutting it till it fits right. Then you can transfer the outline to the wood. It's a lot easier to trim the cardboard (or tape some back on if you cut too much off). When you are done, you may have to trim a little bit from the wood to get it just right. You may want to cut it just a bit large and sand it to match.
