There is a pro and a contra to do that.
Pro is that the stained mahog has a nicer color.
Natural mahog is brown, stained you can turn is into a deep redbrown (you can also verify that).

Contra is, that it's nearly impossible to repair scrates etc in the stained surface without that you can see it.

Both surfaces are bleaching out. On old mahog boats you can see the exposed areas getting yellow. I bought stain from a joiner. It was solvent stain and I was nearly drunk after that process, but the appearance was great and it went more than great after the first layer of epoxy. I would do it again.
