I would imagine the carb engine would be just fine as long as you watch the engine mounting angle. Either use a down angle trans (as I did) or at least use an angled plate under the carb to keep it near level. The 16 degreee mounting angle is a bit much for a carbureted engine without some modifications.

The chevy 350 with carb (or TBI) is taller than the MPI engine. The Riviera engine comaprtment is a bit low (for a chevy 350) anyway. This will very well push you to a hood scoop or a raised side engine compartment.

Aside from the height concerns, when it comes to the engine, the "more HP is better" mentality sometimes takes over, and of course I was completely level headed in this area ;) .
The stated 50-60 HP increase (per mfr specs) of the MPI engine vs the carb version is appealing. Also, keeping up with the specs of the competition ski boats is another thing (even ignoring the 700-1000 lb weight advantage of the Riviera vs most fiberglass competition ski boats).
