Back in my sailing days, I crewed on Palmer Johnson 30 on Lake Michigan and was responsible for most of the maintenance on the boat.

The exhaust system including heat exchanger / muffler were located under the engine, just above the keel. The prior owners had installed galvanized fittings and for a few years we kept reinstalling galvanized fittings and pieces. Many only lasted 1 season. After the 4th time of doing this, the heat exchanger also died. We then replaced everything with stainless and NO MORE PROBLEMS.

One of the "pleasures" of doing the exhaust work was having to pull the engine up. We either grunted it up with a cross bar (when the boat was on the cradel and we discovered the damage before spring launch) or (much more fun) dropped the main sheet down through the hatch directly over the engine and used the winch to hoist it up.
