Since you are wiring your boat using a merc outboard, I'd stick to Mercury's wiring color codes. These can be found in any late model merc service manual, regardless of horsepower. Key on power should be purple, Tach singnal should be grey hooked up to your voltage regulator on the engine, 12V constant power should be red and the kill circut should be black with a yellow tracer, neutral interrupt should be yellow (sometimes with a red tracer) Don't mix wiring colors, it will save you time and aggrivation on installation and in the future. Remember to run seperate 12v and ground wires from your battery, do not tie your lighing into the engine feeds under the dash. I see this in home-wired boats at the marina I work at, and it generally leads to erratic engine operation... my 2 cents.
