Phil Bolger's book "Small Sail Boat Rigs" shows excellent example of the lateen, sprit and other rigs.

The lateen rig has a short mast. The sail is triangular in shape with a boom and a spar (lateen) running up the luff. There is also a picture of the lateen rig in "The Annapolis Book of Seamanship". Both the lateen and sprit are shown in "Chapman Piloting". The ubiquitious Sunfish is rigged with the lateen so you should be able to find a production rig. Both rigs are fairly simple to build. The 12 footer I built has a lateen made from old 2x4s. I think I spent an entire twenty dollar bill on the spars and sail. You can see "Mattian" at my website for a clearer picture.

Hope this helps.
