: has anyone ever used red oak for building one of glen-l"s designs????

Boomer - "Red Oak" wood has pores that are
relatiely open and water can fill up these
pores quite easily. "White Oak" has pores that
are filled up with some substance. They used to
claim if you used red oak for fence posts, they'd
rot out in a couple years, while ones made out
of white oak will last for years. I built my
18' ROUTSABOUT from all White Oaks lengthwise
lumber, as much as I could. There used to be
a place on Hudson RIver, in NY State - that
would sell and ship white oak marine grade
lumber. Starts with a "W" but I can't remember
name! Also if real strenght is your need -
you also need to try and find "AIR DRIED"
White Oak - its much stronger and less
brittle. Kiln dried, like they use for furniture
and sell in Home Depot - is brittle, quite dry,
and not as strong.

good luck, Fred, 10/16
