: I was wondering about the use of kiln dried birch or poplar for the chine and sheer. I am having trouble finding the red mahogany or spruce for the glenn-l scull boat. Any thoughts about these two types of woods?.

Poplar has extremely poor performance in a wet environment. Birch is somewhat better but still lacks the qualities desired for boat building. Try bald cypress or western red cedar. These have been used with much success in canoe building.
