: I am looking at building an Amigo (22') sailboat.
: I am looking for any possiable information. (i.e.
: average costs, skill level, etc...) I have never
: built a sailboat before, any advice? Can it be done
: cheaply? Thanks.

Two years ago I finished my Amigo 22. It took
about 6 years and about $15,000.00. I chose to
build in fiberglass and installed a used 8hp
yanmar diesel. I got some good advise on how to work with
glass and got the hang of it pretty fast. This was
my first "real" boat project. The most important
skill in my opinion is keeping motivated. Its a good sized
project, it may seem to take forever. I bought a lot
of stuff used at marine flea markets, the yanmar
came from a `72 flicka (very similar boat), I did buy new sails.
I think if I had it to do over again I might
look into a used boat that needed some work, I would
have been in the water sooner. If you start the project
you really have to want to build a boat. Now
that she`s in the water she sails great, but after
my wife and I had our daughter about a year ago we
don`t get out on the water as much as we like. good luck, RCR
