I have seen these too. I think that it would be best too use it as a motor to drive a hydraulic pump. From this, you can run a separate hydraulic motor/s that are easily started,stopped and reversed with a control valve. This arrangement allows you to mount the motor virtually anywhere (preferably low in the center of the boat) and the remote motor at the shaft log/outdrive coupling.
