TRANSITION JOINT: In the forward section there is usually a point where it is no longer practical to lap the bottom planking over the edge of the side planking. At a point we call the "transition joint", the bottom planking changes from lapping to butting to the side planking. At the stem, the side and bottom planking will be in-line.
