2-19-04 And now the skeg, after fairing, boring, antifouling and bootstripe paints on. Seen adjacent to the hull is the overhead hoist (2 x 6 construction) that will be used to invert the boat. A detail of the hoist construction: What cannot be seen is the top horizontal beam... it's just so tall it's hard to fit in, but consists of three 2 x 6 members epoxied and carriage bolted. Estimated strength of this design is about 6,000 pounds so I should have a safety factor of at least 6x. Lastly, I have changed my mind about the engine and have spent the bucks to get a legitimate marine engine (Yanmar 2GM20) but I've stayed with the plans to use a 16" prop. Here's the engine sitting next to my original engine for comparison... quite a difference, no? In some ways I lament giving up on the old IHC engine but this Yanmar is a much better option for this boat. Besides, I'm sure I'll find a use for the IHC in the future. Soon I'll be rolling the hull and I will try to include some detailed photos of the process. Mark Jones - Lewiston, ID |
