Building the Glen-L 10 - page 6
The panel is re-applied to the bottom of the boat and the planking is progressively hand fitted along the center of the keel/stem area. Other edges may be left oversize and trimmed to fit after fastening in place. If there is difficulty in bending the panel in the forward section, hot water can be poured over the outside surface near the bow.
Butt blocks are fitted between the battens to join the forward and aft sections of the bottom planking. Butt blocks may be fastened prior to permanent application of the planking, then the planking applied as a single piece. Alternately, the forward section can be fastened in place and then the aft portion butt joined. Note: When we say fastened in place, all permanent joints are glued and fastened.
After fitting fitting the first bottom half, it should be transferred to the panel for the second half and the second panel cut out (oversize). Beveling and careful fitting of the second bottom panel will be required in the area around the stem.
The interior of the boat should be painted prior to decking. An anti-rot preservative may be used with paint or an epoxy coating with paint. Be sure not to coat surfaces that will be glued with anti-rot or paint. |
