Ski Tow/Malahini constructionFig. 8 - Observe the appearance of the chine at the forward frame. The chine has been set flush to the back side of the forward frame; the notch has been beveled so that the chine mates securely to the frame. The forward edge of the frame will be faired during the fairing process. The upright piece near the top center of the photo is blocking that is fastened to the building form and the frame to keep the frame from moving during construction. Fig. 9 - The sheer clamp notches must also be beveled so that the sheer will mate firmly to the frames. Unlike the chine log, the sheer clamp must be set in vertically in the forward portion of the boat. Note: Sheer and sheer clamp are terms for the same member Fig. 10 - The sheer clamp is built from two laminations to facilitate bending. Here Don is applying the second lamination. Glue is used liberally between the layers and clamped or fastened together, driven from the inside out. Fig. 11 - Don is illustrating the fact that the plywood planking will not lay flat to all the members. Note how it will be necessary to fair or bevel both the chine log and the keel member. |
