Fig 7: In the aft section, a straight-edge from chine to keel is used to determine the bevel required on both the chine and the keel so that the planking will have solid contact surfaces.
Fig 8: It is imperative that the longitudinal lines of the hull be fair without any bumps or dips. The straight-edge is being used along the keel to check the longitudinal straightness after fairing.
Fig 9: A hand plane or power plane are the ideal tools for fairing longitudinal members. To facilitate fairing, a straight-edge can be positioned athwartship every 8 to 12 inches and "fair" notches made with a rasp. This is followed by the plane.
